U.S.S. TEXAS - BB35

Propulsion

The ship's main propulsion was accomplished with two propellers directly driven by two reciprocating steam engines fed by six Bureau Express oil fired boilers.  This was a closed loop system with the residual steam exhausted from the engines sent to condensers, converted to water and returned to reserve water tanks located beneath the boiler rooms.  Steam generated by the boilers was also used to run the turbine driven electrical generators, cook food, heat the ship in cold climates, and for a number of other functions.  The extremely pure water required by the boilers was purified from sea water using an evaporator system on the second and third decks.

All of the equipment can be viewed by clicking on the appropriate portions of the diagram at the bottom of this page.
